    Ingredients Profile

    Arnica (Arnica montana)

    Useful Parts: Flowers

Affinity: heart, circulatory system, musculo-skeletal system

    Energy: Warming, drying

    Overview:

Arnica is considered one of the oldest and most important drug plants of Europe. In folk tradition, it was used for heart problems, uterine bleeding, fatigue, boils, insect bites and inflamed veins. However, Arnica is not recommended for internal use due to certain adverse effects (see Caution below). It was particularly useful for swelling, bruising, sprains, contused muscles, and pain from injury and trauma.

    Caution:

Taking Arnica internally may cause gastric irritation. High doses can cause nausea, vomiting, intoxication, dizziness, convulsions, tremors, tachycardia, arrhythmia, collapse, and coma. Even though Homeopathic preparations of Arnica do not cause these problems, no form of the herb (tincture, homeopathic, or otherwise) should be applied to broken skin as it may absorb into the bloodstream to cause adverse effects.

    Comfrey (Symphytum Officinale)

    Useful Parts: Leaves

    Affinity: Bones, connective tissues

    Energy: Cooling, moistening

    Overview:

Comfrey has a long history of traditional use to aid in the healing of injuries. It is the main ingredient in many poultice and topical vulnerary herbal formulations for external application. Sometimes it is found in some tissue healing formulas for internal use. Since growing concerns of liver toxicity internal use of this herb has ceased (see “Caution” below). It is now used, primarily in topical compresses, poultices, salves, and other cosmetic applications.

    Caution:

Comfrey is completely safe for topical use. However, when taken internally it is believed to cause liver problems due to its content of pyrrozolidine alkaloids. Internal use is not recommended, especially during pregnancy, in the presence (or diagnosis) of cancer, tumors, or a history of liver problems.

Lobelia (Lobelia inflata) a.k.a Asthma Weed, Indian Tobacco, Puke Weed

    Useful Parts: Leaf

    Affinity:

Energy: Relaxing, slightly warming, slightly drying

    Overview:

Lobelia has a long history of use in Native American herbalism. Native tribes used it to relieve asthma attacks, ease pain caused by tension, clear lymphatic congestions; and they even applied it topically to insect bites and stings. Smoking Lobelia was also common in Native American traditions, thus its alias Indian Tobacco. The presence of the alkaloid, lobeline which binds to the same receptors in the nervous system as nicotine, makes Lobelia a suitable addition to herbal smokes; and a deterrent to smoking tobacco.

Lobelia’s tendency to relax tensed muscle makes it a highly sought after herb in herbal medicine, and affords it the strongest relaxant in the plant kingdom. Thus, it appears in many herbal formulas designed to address muscle tension and tightness.

    Caution:

Numerous sources claim Lobelia can cause convulsions, coma and even death because of the potential effects of the active ingredient, Lobeline. However, no record of the whole herb causing any of these adverse effects whether historically or otherwise.

In high doses Lobelia will produce severe symptoms of nausea, vomiting, profuse sweating, and deep relaxation. However, these symptoms typically pass quickly and the person feels better afterwards. As such, Lobelia is not recommended in high doses, for long term use, or for weak, debilitated persons or persons who are deeply relaxed. In order to avoid its unpleasant effects, repeated small amounts can be taken or as an addition in a formula with other herbs.

    Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans)

    Useful Parts: Nut/seed

    Affinity: Stomach, spleen, small intestines

    Energy: Warming, slightly sedating

    Overview:

Nutmeg is the kernel of an evergreen tree that is native to Indonesia. It was first discovered in the Banda Islands, a cluster of small volcanic islands also known as the “Spice Islands” that is now part of the province of Moluccas, Indonesia. The Myristica fragrans tree matures over several years making a dual contribution to our world: Mace (arillus), the outer leathery coating of the fruit; and the inner warming vivacious aromatic kernel, (the seed) we know as Nutmeg.

Nutmeg has a rich world-wide culinary application to flavor eggnog, pies, cordials, stews, puddings, baked goods, and breakfast cereals. It makes the key ingredient in spice blends such as mulling spice, pumpkin pie spice, Quatre-Epices (French four spice blend), and Ras el Hanout, a Moroccan aromatic spice blend. However, Nutmeg is known for its health benefits in its homeland of Asia. In India, it is considered an aphrodisiac and used for bad breath, nausea, and fever. In China, small amounts are used as a sedative, and to treat inflammation, diarrhea, and headaches.

    Caution:

Nutmeg is toxic in high amounts and can cause severe headache. It is totally safe in small amounts just as is used in cooking.

Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum clava-herculis) a.k.a Yellow Wood, Szechuan Pepper

    Useful Parts: Bark, seeds

Affinity: Heart, arteries, stomach, intestines, reproductive system

    Energy: Warming, drying

    Overview:

Prickly Ash is native to the southeastern United States. Native Americans have had a long history of marked successful use of the bark to aid circulation. The Eclectic herbalists later joined Native Americans using Prickly Ash primarily to increase peripheral circulation in the presence of peripheral neuropathy, sciatica with damaged, numb, tingling or painful nerves. The Chinese use the fruits of the Chinese species, known as Szechuan Pepper, both as food and medicine. Prickly Ash bark added into herbal formulas, drunk as a tea, or an extract.

    Caution:

Not recommended during pregnancy or nursing.

    Solomon’s Seal (Polygonatum biflorum)

    Useful Parts: Root

Affinity: Kidneys, spleen, bones, muscles, connective tissue

    Energy: Neutral

    Overview:

Solomon’s seal is native to North America where indigenous tribes ate it as food. They believed it strengthened bones and supported kidney function. They made soups and bread with its starchy rhizome and ate young shoots raw or cooked like asparagus. Its root can be added to herbal blends, teas, extracts, and poultices. Solomon’s Seal affinity for the musculoskeletal system makes it a useful herb in toning up loose ligaments and tendons, as well as a beneficial tonic to the kidneys and reproductive organs. Only the mature roots of plants five years or older possess these qualities, though. Solomon’s Seal gets its name from a scar that develops where the rhizome attaches to the roots during the fall that resembles King Solomon’s seal.

    Caution:

No known side effects have been recorded from consuming this herb.

    Turmeric (Curcuma Longa)

    Useful Parts: Root

    Affinity: Liver, Gallbladder, Lung, Heart

    Energy: Cooling, drying

    Overview:

A popular culinary spice commonly used in condiments and curries; and an even more popular herb in Oriental traditional medicine. Historical uses suggest immense gastrointestinal benefits including relief of colic, indigestion, dyspepsia, and ulcers. It is also regarded as a powerful remedy that aids liver function and helps dissolve as well as prevent gallstones. In India, it is sought after for a wide variety of health benefits including liver detox, stimulating digestion, as a styptic to arrest bleeding, and as a topical for numerous skin problems.

However, it is Turmeric’s use as an anti-inflammatory that affords it [has earned it celebrity status] a place among the best remedies. Its role in easing pain in osteo and rheumatoid arthritis is well-known. The main active compound in Turmeric, Curcuma, has been widely studied and tested in research around the world. Some studies suggest it may also be helpful in preventing breast, colon, prostrate and lung cancers as well as childhood leukemia.

Caution: No known side effects, contraindications, or drug interactions.
